"Buffalo Plaid (Comic Book Hero)" is the second single from the 'Days Amidst the Dust' album. It's an arena folk-rock anthem, anchored on a lush 12-string and spirited vocal. The album version is paired with previously unreleased b-side "No Satellite" and a seaside mix of the lead track.
Buffalo Plaid (Comic Book Hero) is a great example of my lifelong affair with "the big music". Lyrically, its all about bringing things back to a simpler point of reference. No more multi-dimensional maps, just a simple buffalo plaid to guide me.
I wrote the song in the midst of a very punishing stretch of time, slowly counting how slight mis-judgements had led up to massive problems. Or maybe it was just bad luck that was floating around. I'm still not sure, truth be told. Regardless, next time I'd be at the ready. I'd be the comic book hero.
This was a very rewarding song to record. Tom played bass, I brandished the Les Pal for the solo, rhythm guitars, keys and drums, and Geist played the complimentary lead lines throughout the song. And the icing on the cake was have Dave Gutshall come in and flatpick a wonderful layer, gently bringing it all together.
It's a near-end of set anthem at many shows, and one that I truly feel shows the spirit of my writing and performance.
